The Most Important Learning That They Missed Out.

In this article I wanted to share what I think is missing from an established learning model and what it could mean for your business.

In 1969 a professor called Edgar Dale came up with a model called the ‘Cone of Learning’. This cognitive psychology model identified that when looking at message retention 2 weeks after the delivery he found that we tend to remember 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we see & hear, 70% of what we say and 90% of what we say & do.


So what does this mean?

In short when we want people to remember something it’s much better to get them to experience it.

This model does need to be taken with a pinch of salt, there are slight variations to the model with varying results but the foundations of it all point favourable of experiential learning over passive learning.

However I believe Dale missed one crucial stage of the cone of learning. What if there was a method that allowed us to remember up to 100% of what we learn. What if we remembered 100% of what we believe in?

The thing is when we believe in something we develop a heightened emotional connection with it and embrace every aspect of it with strong views and opinions. We are human beings, not human doings, and especially not human readings.

So when we need people to truly be aligned with a business it’s important for them to believe in it, and when they are they will feel empowered to deliver it.
